South Derbyshire District Council declared a nature emergency in 2023.
RESOLVED:The Council formally declared an ecological emergency in response to theongoing threat to wildlife and ecosystems.The declaration recognised the essential role that nature played andprovided a statement of intent, to enhance and restore our naturallandscape, local wildlife, rivers, streams, water resources, habitats andtrees and resist the destruction of such habitats through a considered andsustainable local planning policy.The motion would see the Council add ecological considerations, togetherwith any implications, alongside those for climate, sustainability, andnature recovery in the Council’s new corporate plan as strategic prioritiesembedded within all areas of Council engagement.The Council would continue to collaborate with its communities,businesses and other organisations, existing networks, and partnershipsto improve ecological literacy, encourage greater biodiversity, increaselocal sustainable food production in order to protect food security, treeplanting and management.
